I believe that saying: ‘Life is in the details.’ Those moments during the day can actually be a source of joy and meaning. Appreciating the little details can bring a sense of well-being and comfort.
We can bring balance to our lives by both acknowledging negative triggers and embracing the small moments that bring joy.
Deb Dana is a licensed clinical social worker and author of Polyvagal Theory in Therapy who writes about ‘glimmers’ vs. ‘triggers.’ Triggers alert us to perceived dangers, while glimmers are cues for the nervous system to find the joy in small moments. Feeling the warmth of the sun, enjoying time with the people you love, the smell of baking bread or coffee in the morning, these are examples of small moments.
The small moments, or glimmers, are all around us. We only need to notice them and incorporate them into our lives.
I’ve read many articles on this subject, and most of them suggest ideas such as, ‘Ten Ways To Notice Small Moments.’
What I’m suggesting is not to ‘do’ anything, but to notice your surroundings. Simply using your senses; that can be enjoying the feeling of a soft blanket, hearing the sound of rain against the window, smelling the scent of pine trees during a walk in the woods, tasting that first morning cup of coffee. In opening yourself up to the world around you, wonder, magic, and serendipity become a natural part of your life.
If you are looking for someone to help you fine tune your life so that you take the time to notice the special moments and notice the glimmers in your every day, you’re in luck! I am accepting new clients and would love to speak with you!
