A Life to Savor

Let’s take a moment and look around. Most of us are so busy that we don’t take the time to simply breathe. In this article, we’ll take a pause and savor what surrounds us.

We’re not talking just about food, but life itself. Being aware in real time of what’s happening and the enjoyment of it, is what it means to savor events in our lives, both big and small and everywhere in between. It’s a form of mindfulness.

Let’s look at how we can feed our appetite for life.

In daily life, for example, we can turn around a less than enjoyable experience like being stuck in traffic. One way would be to have an audio book on hand so that you can enjoy a good book instead of grumping about the traffic. You can think about the glass of wine or a delicious dinner that is waiting for you at home. Or anticipate crawling into your comfy bed to relax and watch a favorite tv show.

On a larger scale, you can start enjoying an upcoming vacation by researching places to eat and museums to go to and what you can see there. You can imagine yourself hanging out at the beach for a day of relaxation.

Your sense of well-being as you savor the moment is great for your health and happiness. You are aware of the present moment when you take in the beauty of fall leaves on a walk or spending an afternoon at a museum looking at some favorite works of art and taking the time to savor the details. Sources of wonder and awe are all around us if we take the time to notice.

Looking back at happy events through reminiscing with family over memories is a way to enjoy those events again through your memories. Looking at family photo albums also has that effect. Sharing  special  memories with loved ones is good for your well-being and theirs.

Some ideas of ways to savor moments both big and small:

Anticipation of fun and enriching events adds to your enjoyment.

Being in nature and observing the world around you.

Savor the moment you’re in and notice details of your environment.

Allow yourself time to enjoy remembering special moments and events.

Celebrate happy events!

So take the time and attention to savor your life and indulge yourself in those moments.
