The Power of Self-Forgiveness

A definition of forgiveness is an intentional action to let go of emotions such as anger and revengeful feelings towards another person you feel has wronged you. People frequently find it easier to forgive others than it is to forgive themselves.

Mistakes are rich learning opportunities, if we open ourselves to the self-knowledge they impart.

Forgiveness is not condoning the behavior, whether concerning yourself or others. Here are some ways to move toward forgiveness-

  1. Seek to understand your emotions.

  2. Accept responsibility.

  3. Strive for self-compassion.

  4. Express remorse for your mistakes.

  5. Apologize to yourself and others.

  6. Use mistakes as a learning experience.

  7. Figure out ways to improve.

These are generally the steps for moving beyond blame to self-forgiveness. Empathy is a huge component of forgiveness, thus understanding and acknowledging your feelings is the foundation for self-forgiveness.
